Changing direction might seem intimidating at first, but it can also be a great adventure!
These 10 steps will show you how to reboot your career:
- Admit you need to start over. Starting over can be hard, but sometimes we might have little choice. Taking control of the change will help to reduce anxiety and set you on the right path.
- Identify what you like to do. What do you love about your current or previous work? What energizes you? Look for roles that draw on the things you enjoy.
- Research your options. Now that you've identified what you like, start looking at your options. Keep an eye on industry news, social media groups, and internal vacancies to see what's available.
- Assess your strengths and skills. Once you know what's out there, find out whether you have the necessary skills for the position. If not, what do you need to do to get them?
- Build your network. Build relationships by attending events and engaging on social media. You'll learn about opportunities, and create a support network you can draw on if needed.
- Find a mentor. A mentor can share their insights, steer you on the right path, and help expand your network.
- Set goals. Change can be intimidating, but having clear goals will help you to stay focused on what you need to do.
- Be realistic and flexible. It might take you longer than you expect to get your dream job. So be prepared to consider alternative options.
- Create your own opportunities. Develop new skills, volunteer or even intern somewhere you really want to work. This will give you the chance to test-drive a new career and prove what you're capable of.
- Stay positive. It takes courage to change, so be brave and treat this as a chance to broaden your horizons.
