Step out of your comfort zone, but beware of the panic zone...
Uh-oh, are you giving up?
Too easy? Too hard?
Well, when you're learning something new, you've got to make sure that you're in the right zone.
The Learning Zone model was created by psychologist Lev Vygotsky, and it describes the three stages of learning.
The first stage is the comfort zone. Here, you have your routine, everyday work and tasks. You know what you're doing and you're comfortable doing it.
Beyond the comfort zone is the learning zone. It can be intimidating here but this is where you learn and develop new skills. It's an opportunity for adventure, curiosity, and growth. The more time you spend here, the more you'll master new skills and pass them into your comfort zone.
But wait, there's a final zone. That's right. It's the panic zone. It's filled with unreasonable demands, information you're not ready to process, and stress. Lots of stress. No doubt about it. It's a bad place to be. It might even leave you feeling scared to ever leave your comfort zone again.
So how do you avoid the panic zone when you're learning something new? Well, you'll need resolve. There'll always be challenges, but with determination and self-belief, you'll be able to see them through.
Support and guidance will go a long way too and build anchors to your comfort zone. When practicing new skills, link them to other skills and strengths you already have. That way, you'll feel more confident the next time you step out of your comfort zone and start learning.
