Video Transcript

Set yourself up for success by avoiding these eight common goal-setting mistakes.

It's easy to set goals, but it's also easy to abandon them.

Let's take a look at eight common goal-setting mistakes, and how to avoid them.

1. Your Goal is Unrealistic

When brainstorming goals, it's great to dream big. But, you also need to be realistic. Make your goals SMART: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, Time-bound.

2. Your Goal Doesn't Focus on the Right Things

Most people focus only on work when setting goals. But this means they miss out on the things that bring them joy, like writing, reading, or spending time with family. So remember to strike the right balance between home and work when you set your next goal.

3. Your Goal Takes Too Long

When you underestimate how long a goal can take, it can be discouraging. Take the pressure off! Give yourself some extra time to account for delays and setbacks.

4. You Don't Learn From Mistakes

No matter how hard you work, sometimes you will fail to achieve your goals. But there are important lessons to be learned from mistakes. Take a note of what went wrong and use this information to move forward positively.

5. You're Influenced by Others

Some people, like your friends, family, or even your boss, may want to influence your goals. They may think they know best or want you to take a certain path. Remember, your goals are your own! Politely, but assertively, set goals that are right for you!

6. You Don't Track Your Progress

Goals take time and, if progress is slow, it can be demoralizing. Review the headway that you've made, regularly. Set small goals, celebrate your successes, and identify what you need to do to keep moving forward.

7. You Set "Negative" Goals

Negative goals like "I want to lose weight" or "I must stop staying late at work" focus on what you don't want. This can make them emotionally unattractive, causing you to lose focus.

Reframe your goals positively. For example, instead of saying, "I want to lose weight," say, "I want to get healthy."

8. You Set Too Many Goals

When you try to focus on too much at once, it can become confusing and exhausting. Use the "quality not quantity" rule. Prioritize your goals for the next six to 12 months, and pick out three that you want to concentrate on. This will allow you to focus your time and energy on the things that really matter.
