5 Ways to Overcome Networking Nerves Video

Video Transcript

Preparation is key when it comes to being a confident networker.

Networking is an important part of any job. New connections can open new doors for you, give you key information, and help you to excel in your industry. But the idea of talking to strangers can be daunting. So, here are five tips that can help you overcome those networking nerves!

  1. Set some goals. Consider what you want to gain from this networking event. Are you looking for a potential business partner, or just some information about a new product? How many people do you want to speak to?
  2. Think about what you might say. You don't need to rehearse a script, but it might help your confidence to loosely prepare a short introduction about yourself, and some open questions to ask others. And, consider how you'll answer these questions when the spotlight is on you!
  3. Take a friend or co-worker. They can help you to break the ice with new people and take some of the attention off you during conversation. But don't rely on them to do all the talking! You still need to make the effort if you want to create a good first impression.
  4. Take a time-out. Too much socializing at once can deplete your social battery, so break up conversations with a short walk or to grab a coffee.
  5. Don't overdo it. You don't have to talk to everyone, and you don't have to attend for the full duration of the event. Know when it's time to move on from a conversation, and then politely excuse yourself.

Networking takes many of us out of our comfort zones, but it is possible to overcome our fears when we use the right strategies.
